The Port Huron City Council is hoping to crack down on smoking in city parks and beaches. At Monday night’s city council meeting, an ordinance was introduced to do just that. Mayor Pauline Repp, speaking to WPHM’s Paul Miller yesterday, says city council has been considering a no-smoking ordinance for several years. Repp says the ordinance is modeled after other Michigan communities, such as East Lansing and Traverse City, who also ban smoking in public parks. The no-smoking ordinance had it’s first reading Monday night and would officially ban the use of any tobacco product, marijuana, or vaporizers at city parks and beaches. This week’s meeting saw a first reading of the ordinance, with a second reading scheduled for May 14th. Also in city news, Port Huron will have a new garbage hauler. City Council this week approved a $9-million bid from Emterra Environmental for five years of trash removal services. The new garbage contract will begin July first.
