Port Huron Mayor shares concerns about park ordinance

A proposed ordinance which would set a consistent closing time for Port Huron parks, beaches, and pools will need to be tweaked before Port Huron City Council reconsiders it. Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp says council on Monday denied a second reading of the ordinance, citing concerns from citizens and council members alike. Repp, speaking to WPHM, says a blanket closing time of 9:00 p.m. could be problematic, especially during the summer months. Several parks such as Pine Grove and Sanborn hold softball and tennis games that go past 9pm, according to Repp. Port Huron Police Chief Joe Platzer, who would be charged with enforcing the new closing times, says the ordinance would create consistency in enforcement and tells WPHM it would allow police to remove individuals who may be causing a disturbance. Council is expected to take up a revised park closing time ordinance after the new year.
