Although winter may be over, it’s still around that time of year where the majority of people are infected with a common bug that is often mistaken as the “stomach flu”. The St. Clair County Health Department is advising residents that a contagious virus is still common this time of year. Norovirus outbreaks take place throughout the year, but according to the St. Clair County Health Department, 80% of the outbreaks occur between November and April. Unlike the flu, there is no specific treatment for the norovirus, which can cause intestinal and stomach distress, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Preventing yourself from becoming infected is the key. Wash your hands frequently; hand sanitizer does not work against the norovirus. The health department advises to stay home if your are sick. Avoid public places, and social events to help stop the spread of the infection.
