An educational event for the whole family is making a return to the Blue Water Area. The Sturgeon Festival, which is a celebration of a fish that was once on the brink of extinction in the St. Clair River, kicks off on Saturday June 4th, at the Great lakes maritime center. Sheri Faust, President of Friends of the St. Clair river, and St. Clair County’s environmental health educator says that one of the interesting things to see at this event is the onshore tank that will have baby sturgeon which you will be able to see, and also kids will be able to hold one. Faust says that regardless of what age you are, this festival is all about teaching the public about this fish, ranging from why it was endangered to what benefit it has in the river ecosystem. Recently the population of the fish has increased in the St. Clair River, meaning that the river is a lot healthier than it used to be. Faust notes that the cruise is all about showing the habitat of the fish, which will be shown by a diver filming at the bottom of the river. Due to the educational nature of the cruise, passengers are limited to ages 6 and up. Tickets for the Cruise are on sale starting April 15th, they can be found on the Huron Lady Website at www.huronlady.com.
