The top three candidates from each party vying to be Michigan’s next governor took to the stage Thursday night here on Mackinac Island for a unique debate during the Detroit Chamber’s annual Mackinac Policy Conference. While the biggest issue at this week’s conference may be infrastructure, the candidates also brought attention to Michigan’s auto insurance premiums which are among the highest in the nation. Democratic candidate Gretchen Whitmer says she would sue the state’s catastrophic claims fund if she was elected Governor. Rebublican Bill Schuette also called for reform of Michigan’s no fault auto insurance. Regarding the state’s infrastructure, Republican Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley touted passage of a $1.2 billion dollar package of bills to fix the roads. Democrat Gretchen Whitmer received applause last night, repeating the phrase “fix the damn roads!”
