Environmental clean-up crews were called to the Black River this weekend on reports of a fuel leak near the former chicory plant. On Friday evening, an oil sheen was noticed in the Black River near the factory, with Port Huron Fire Department and St. Clair County HAZ-MAT crews responding to the scene. It was determined that the fuel was leaking into the river from underground tanks. Containment booms have been deployed in the area immediately surrounding the chicory factory. Battalion Chief Jeff Tucker says an outside contractor is heading up the remediation efforts. In the meantime, Tucker says boaters are urged to watch their speed and slow down near the deployed booms. The amount of fuel that has leaked into the river is unknown at this time. Tucker says the leaking tank has since been plugged.
