The Sanilac County Sheriffs Department’s Marine Division rescued a sailor in distress this past weekend. A Sanilac Township resident reported a vessel with a lit emergency flare about a mile off shore in Lake Huron around 9:30pm Saturday night. Sheriff’s deputies searched an area just north of Port Sanilac in their patrol boat. A 17-foot sailboat occupied by a 78-year old Port Sanilac man was located in the waters. The boat had a dead battery and lost all power, and the man’s cell phone also had a dead battery. The man was not injured and the disabled boat was towed to the Port Sanilac Harbor by the Marine Division. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by Sandusky resident Richard Ball who used his personal boat to help in the search.
