Instead of voting a no fault car insurance rate cut package Thursday, the two GOP legislative leaders say they want to spend more time talking with the governor about a deal. House Speaker Lee Chatfield told reporters there have been productive conversations this week on reaching an agreement. Meantime, Governor Whitmer is against a proposal that would let people fully opt out of mandatory medical benefits covered by their auto insurance premiums. The Governor says everyone needs to buy into the system at a certain level, and is okay with allowing drivers to forgo unlimited coverage and choose a lesser amount, but she draws the line with the zero coverage option. Michigan is the only state to require mandatory personal injury protection.
