Scout camp sale to be discussed Wednesday

The future of a 70-plus year old scout camp in St. Clair County’s Grant Township will be discussed  Wednesday evening. Executives and volunteers with the Michigan Crossroads Council of the Boy Scouts of America are expected to field questions from the local scouting community regarding the potential sale of Silver Trails Scout Reservation. Scout Executive Don Shepard says the scout council has entered into a sales agreement with Mid Michigan Materials, operator of a sand and gravel quarry that mines a portion of the camp property. Pending the results of a geologic study of the property, Silver Trails could be sold to the quarry company for $1.8 million. Shepard says that money would then be used for capital improvements at seven other scout camps in the lower peninsula of Michigan, including a camp located in Lapeer County’s Metamora Township. Wednesday’s meeting, featuring Shepard and other council staff and volunteers, will take place at 6pm at Silver Trails Scout Reservation.
