Elementary students in the Port Huron Area School District could be going back to the classroom as soon as January 11th. However, it could be well into 2021 until all grade levels of the Port Huron Area School District are allowed to reconvene face to face learning.   Theo Kerhoulis, acting superintendent for the Port Huron Area School District, says it’s all about managing staffing shortages due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We know over Christmas and New Year’s people will gather and the numbers will continue to rise,” said Kerhoulis. “By January 11th we should be able to open the elementary (schools) and focus all those extra resources, substitute teachers, to the elementary level.” The board will reconsider opening up middle and high schools at their January 18th board meeting. Kerhoulis also tells WPHM that the school district approved a purchase agreement with an undisclosed buyer for $175,000  for the former Lakeport Elementary building. Lakeport Elementary closed in 2014.
