Commission advances new State Senate map

The state’s redistricting commission has voted 11-2 to advance a proposed State Senate map to the final stage of the process. The State Senate lines are reportedly more fair to Democrats than maps drawn in the last two decades. Under the proposal, much of the 25th State Senate district currently represented by Republican Dan Lauwers will remain in tact. A portion of Tuscola County in the thumb would be added to the new district, with the City of Algonac and Clay and Ira Townships being grouped with Northern Macomb County instead. The commission was created by voters in 2018 to handle the process of drawing congressional and legislative lines instead of the Legislature.
