The Port Huron Planning Commission has greenlighted one of two proposed marijuana stores in the city. Commission Chairman Jim Fisher says a request for a special use permit by the Exhibit Cannabis Company on River Street was approved, but the applicants for a second store on Pine Grove Avenue pulled their request prior to the meeting.

“Our main concern on the planning commission is to make sure that something that’s being done meets our current zoning,” said Fisher. “We don’t address any type of moral issues or other concerns.”

Any marijuana retailers would need to be licensed by the state before they can open. Additionally, the commission paved the way for more vacation rentals in Downtown Port Huron. Fisher tells WPHM a request by Larry Jones to allow vacation rentals inside all 36 Wrigley Center apartments was approved.

“It would give him the flexibility if he has some vacancies,” said Fisher. “People come and go… so there may be a time that a unit that was a vacation rental… could be leased out as a long term rental.”

The planning commission also recommended a change in zoning from residential to neighborhood business for a new restaurant owned by Dale Moses at 1340 Water Street. That request will now be sent to City Council for their consideration.
