Some improvements to bicycle safety are coming to Gratiot Avenue in Port Huron. City Manager James Freed says when the roadway finally reopens later this year, new five foot green bike lanes will be painted on either side of the roadway.
“Whenever we reconstruct a road, we look at all intermodal transportation,” said Freed. “Bike, pedestrian, vehicles… what can we do here?”
Freed however acknowledges the new bike lanes could leave some Gratiot Avenue homeowners wondering where to park.
“We have to make a decision if we want on street parking or bike lanes,” Freed added. “On Gratiot… most people have off street parking, so it just made sense.”
Gratiot Avenue is expected to reopen in Mid-November. Freed adds the new bike lanes will help connect portions of the regional Bridge to Bay trail, including a newly built section of trail over the Black River Canal.
