As we approach the first day of classes in the Port Huron Area School district, superintendent Theo Kerhoulas students can expect to see some new faces and some new signage in area schools. Speaking to WPHM, Kerhoulas says several dozen new teachers have been hired.

“There’s 44 new teacher, we’re a big place… we’ve got some great new people, and when I say new some of them have a lot of experience.”

Additionally, Kerhoulas says the district has received a $163,000 grant from a Native American group to help the district rebrand three school mascots that were retired at the end of last year. Taking the place of the “Big Reds” at Port Huron High School will be the “Red Hawks” which means signage and equipment will need to be updated.

“Score boards, uniforms for sports teams and bands, signage interior and exterior… you’ll already see it and it will be up in time for the first day of school.”

Roosevelt Elementary Students will be know as the Little Red Hawks and Michigamme Elementary School’s new mascot will be the Cardinals.
