The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department says they have made an arrest in an over 40 year old cold case. 70 year old Douglas Laming of Fort Gratiot was arrested Friday in connection to the death of Karen Umphrey. Her body was found in the Port Huron State Game Area on November 2nd, 1980. Sheriff’s deputies say they were able to get a positive DNA match thanks to advancements in technology. Through a partnership with the Michigan State Police and Othram, a company specializing in forensic genetic testing, new information was recovered connecting Laming to Umphrey’s death. He has since been arraigned on charges of felony murder and is lodged in the St. Clair County Jail.
