This weekend, the Fort Gratiot Light Station County Park will welcome in sand sculptors from around the world for the 10th Blue Water Sand Fest. The festival – which is a partnership between the Friends of the Fort Gratiot Light Station, Port Huron Museum, and The Sand Lovers competitive sculpting organization – raises funds for the historic preservation of the light station. Bill Knight of the Sand Lovers spoke to our Paul Miller about some changes made to the competition this year.

“We added a couple more sculptors, we have 14 solo (artists), four doubles teams, we made the kids zone bigger… the welcome sculpture a little bit different,” said Knight. “This year being the 10th year we brought in a little more sand.”

All of the sand truck in for the event will then be donated to be used at the Fort Gratiot County Park beach off Metcalf Road. In addition to the competitions, there will be festival food, a beer tent, and free sand sculpting lessons. Day and weekend passes are available at the gate, more information can be found online at www.bluewatersandfest.com.
