After months of workshops and discussions, St. Clair County Commissioners are cutting ties with the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County. During last night’s Community and Economic Development Committee meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to suspend county funding for the EDA indefinitely – along with any services the group provides. Committee Chair Robert Fielitz says the EDA’s response regarding non-disclosure agreements is what lead to his decision.
“By the EDA Executive Board stating that they cannot in good conscious accept funding under those terms… they are indicating the EDA is ready to walk away from county funding.”
Also last night, the County’s Ways and Means committee shot down a proposal to bring a fifty-unit apartment complex to the site of a current downtown parking lot. Port Huron City Manager James Freed unsuccessfully made that pitch to commissioners last night, saying some of their questions were “bizarre” and says he will never avoid an opportunity to advocate for the community.
