Michigan U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin made a stop in Port Huron this week as part of a statewide tour of Michigan’s border communities. Her visit focused on the economic and security issues that come with living along an international crossing.

Slotkin met with local officials and business leaders to discuss how tariffs and trade tensions are impacting Port Huron’s economy with the flow of people and goods across the Blue Water Bridge.

“We know that tourism is down. We know that the casual Canadian traveler who just wants to come over for a meal is maybe thinking twice now because they’re concerned about what might happen when they come over the border,” Slotkin said. “That’s not good for this area. That’s not something that strengthens our economy—it weakens our economy.”

The senator also met with MDOT officials about the upcoming Blue Water Bridge expansion project and spoke with local Customs and Border Protection about cross-border coordination with Canadian law enforcement.

Slotkin’s tour includes multiple stops along Michigan’s borders, as she works to gather firsthand feedback from local communities on U.S.-Canada relations, trade, and infrastructure needs.
