If you’ve walked the Thomas Edison Parkway Boardwalk recently, and thought the river looked a little higher than it did a few weeks ago, you aren’t crazy!
At first glance this year, Great Lakes water levels were lower than last year, which is okay, considering last year the water levels were high. But after a lot of rain throughout the state, and snow melt, the first 12 days of April have had a decent impact!
Lake Superior has risen just under an inch in the first 12 days (they probably still have some melting to do up there), while Lake Huron and Lake Michigan (measured together since they are connected at the Straits of Mackinac) has risen about 3.2 inches since the start of April. That is 2.5 TRILLION gallons of water added to the two lakes!
Lake Erie beat us by a small amount, rising by 3.7 inches, but Lake Ontario rose a whole 10 inches so far in April! It is worth noting that Lake Ontario is the farthest from Michigan, and more snow fell within that region than we got, helping add to the lake.
All in all, with all the water levels rising, the Great Lakes have gained 5.1 trillion gallons of water. That is enough to serve every single American the average amount of water they need for a day, for 164 days.
Just another reason to be proud to be from the Blue Water Area!
