The 2018 Bells Beer Bayview Mackinac Race has come to a conclusion. After taking nearly twice as long as past races, all participating sailboats had crossed the finish line by 6pm yesterday. Of the 196 boats that started in Port Huron Saturday, 42 had dropped out of the race – with some running out of food, water, and patience in light Lake Huron winds. The race was also not without incident. One crew experienced a squall about 40 miles west of the finish line with winds in excess of 30 miles per hour. It dismasted one vessel and resulted in a coast guard rescue. The final boat crossed the finish line at Mackinac Island around 6pm yesterday.
