City Council approves improvements for museum

The Port Huron Museum’s home at the old Carnegie building got a new lease on life Monday night as various improvements were approved by the Port Huron City Council. Council members heard from the head of the museum, Sue Bennett, and others who supported plans for improving the aging structure. Mayor Pauline Repp says around $370,000 in roof work, electrical, and heating purchases were given the green light. Just a few years ago some were suggesting that the museum be moved but Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp notes the former Carnegie building is a keeper and has needed updating for quite some time. She also says the museum board and volunteers have turned the various programs available around erasing in just a few years a $150 thousand deficit. Museum representatives also promise more improvements at the 7th Street location including an expansion of some exhibit space. In other business Monday night the board heard a request for public comment in the annual process for the accreditation of the Police Department and gave approval to a series of improvements to the river walk area by the Young Professionals group.
