Voters in the Port Huron Area School District will be asked to approve two important bond proposals on May 3rd. The proposals, totaling $153 million, will be used to make enhancements and upgrades to every school in the district, including the creation of a magnet school at the former Lakeport Elementary. The Port Huron School Board held their regular meeting Monday night, the last one to be held before voters head to the polls. Board President Jeff Stout says if the proposal passes these bonds will benefit not only students in the district, but also local contractors as well. School officials say that if the bond proposals fail to pass the district will have trouble keeping the doors open over the next 2-3 years. The average age of schools in the district is 63 years. Port Huron schools have the lowest millage rates in our area. If the bond proposals are approved, millage rates would be comparable to Yale. Board President Jeff Stout says With up-to $95 million of economic infusion in the local community. Port Huron is not the only district with an asking on next month’s ballot.. East China is looking at a bond issue too and in Marysville school voters will decide on a non-homestead property tax renewal.
