KFC Commissioned a Painting For the Guy Who Solved Their Twitter Riddle

We can appreciate a strong Social Media game. From the Wendy’s sassy Twitter account to Arby’s geektastic Instagram, fast food joints have been knocking it out of the park entertaining customer with their posts. But the award for craziest social media stunt might have to go to the dark horse: Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Last month, Mike Edgette (@Edgette22) from Sioux Falls, S.D. noticed something strange about who KFC’s twitter was following. While its pretty normal for big corporations to follow a select few accounts, Mike saw Kentucky Fried Chicken only followed 11: 5 of which were Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C, and Emma Bunton who all ruled the world  in the 90’s as The Spice Girls. It got more random when he saw the other 6 followed accounts were just some regular dude names Herb. And that’s when it all clicked: 11 Herbs and Spices! The low key stunt had been in place for about a month before being noticed. “Edge” posted his discovery and immediately went viral.

You’d think that would be the end of it–it COULD have easily been the end of it. But the Colonel had more to say on the matter.

Last week with any pomp or circumstance, Mike receive a large package in the mail. It contained fifty-two $5 gift cards (perfect for one of those new $5 Fill-Ups once a week for a year, of course), a letter from Colonel Sanders himself, and this:

Yes, that is a hand-painted portrait of Mike Edgette holding a drumstick while getting a piggyback ride through a scenic forest landscape by a very fit-looking Colonel Harland Sanders. The painted was done by the same ad agency involved in the KFC romance novel. though the letter from the Colonel claims he did it himself. Now hanging in his living room, I think Mike sums up the experience pretty well here:

Now, if you’ll excuse me I have to go scour all of Hooters’ social media sites to find out if I can get something totally awesome from them involving thighs.
