Port Huron City Manager James Freed is looking forward to what the new year will bring for the city. The city manager says the financial health of Port Huron is much stronger now, due in part to work done to reform the city’s unfunded pension and healthcare liabilities. Freed, who spent much time in Lansing late last year, reflects on the passage of an unfunded liabilities bill that doesn’t go nearly as far as he had hoped. Although the Governor Signed the bill, which would change the way municipalities report unfunded liabilities and set standards for corrective action, Freed says it’s only 6% of what he wanted. Freed says he is “disappointed” in Lansing lawmakers but adds that Port Huron “will be fine”. Now with the city’s finances in order, Freed tells WPHM 2018 will be a year of growth and progress for Port Huron.
