Legislation has been introduced to expand adoption rights to all lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender couples in Michigan. The bills would prevent adoption agencies from discriminating based on sexual orientation. This legislation would expand on Attorney General Dana Nessel’s recent court settlement to ban state-contracted agencies from barring LGBT adoptions. It would allow a same-sex partner to adopt their partner’s biological or adoptive child and ensure child placement agencies cannot discriminate against same-sex couples based on religious beliefs.
