Classes in the Port Huron Area School District are set to begin next week, and superintendent Jamie Cain says the district’s buildings will be ready in time to welcome students. Fort Gratiot Middle School, the Cleveland Academy, and Garfield Elementary School have all seen improvements over the summer and construction will wrap up in time for Tuesday’s first day of school. The final building to see renovations will be Port Huron High, with Cain telling WPHM crews will continue work during the school year. “By next year at this time, we will be able to say we just completed this $106 million bond, we did it on time, we did it on budget,” said Cain. Passed by voters in 2016, the bond calls for new science labs, secure building entrances, updated heating and air, and new technology for staff and students.
