The developer behind projects such as the St. Clair Inn and the Hotel Harrington has his sights set on yet another local historic building. Jeff Katofsky says he intends to close on the Maccabees Building in downtown Port Huron by the end of the year. He intends to renovate the building and use it for office space. “We looked at this and said, ‘What a gem!'” Katofksy says he doesn’t have enough office space between the St. Clair Inn and Hotel Harrington and that the Maccabees building makes sense due to its proximity. “It sounds silly, but we don’t have enough space to do what we’re doing.” The purchase is expected to close in December, at which time the building will be vacated by its current tenants. Built in 1906, the Maccabees Building – located in the 900 block of Huron Avenue – is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
