More people who aren’t working can file for unemployment benefits as of Monday morning. The state Unemployment Insurance Agency says gig economy, self-employed, and independent contractors can begin applying for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance as of 8 a.m. on the state’s website. Those eligible will begin receiving state benefits and an $600 federal payment as early as April 20th. Workers will need to provide proof of income to receive the maximum amount they are entitled. This could include W-2s, 1099 tax forms, and pay stubs. Michiganders with last names A-L are asked to use to the state’s unemployment website system Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Those with last names M-Z are to log on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. More information on applying for unemployment in Michigan can be viewed at www.michigan.gov/leo.
