St. Clair County is taking steps to reopen government services to the public while also protecting public health. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office reopens to the public Tuesday May 26th. Handgun purchase permits and fingerprinting will be done by appointment only by calling 987-1700. All visitors must bring and wear a protective face mask. The St. Clair Sheriff’s office lobby will be open from 8:30am to 4:30pm. “We are pleased to be able to get back to some services for our citizens, even though it is on a limited basis,” said Sheriff Donnellon. “We know that those we serve will use common sense and keep themselves and our employee’s safe as we start getting back to normal operations.”

County Commissioner Bill Gratopp, speaking to WPHM’s Paul Miller Friday, says he expects other aspects of county government to start opening up as well. He says many furloughed county employees are returning to work, with some exceptions. “Clerk’s office is reopening, they’ve got almost everybody back now, the courts have almost everybody back,” said Gratopp. “The only one that’s holding out right now are the libraries, that’s going to be a little more difficult.” He cited the cleaning of library books and other materials as reason. “It’s going to be a little longer I’m afraid on the libraries, everything else is starting to slowly come back,” said Gratopp.
